Society at large is going to suffer. Only sound economic policy can give a good standard of living to a great number of people.

You are saying that miners wanted to work and not be on benefits. But if you work in an industry, as the British coal industry was, that is not profitable and needs to be over subsidized, I cannot see much difference with claiming benefits.

Money does not have any value per se, as you can see from the euro crisis. Money can only reflect and have the value given to it by the real economy, i.e. production and trade. Coal mining was not competitive, there was no market for it, the mines had to be closed.

People have to understand that, when wealth is not produced, money runs out, as it is happening now all over the West because people expect to have all their needs fulfilled for nothing.

Christianity emphasizes individual responsibility and self-reliance. Unemployed miners and workers should have moved or gone to work in other areas. People can start little businesses, even simple things like running a market stall.

Adaptation, change and initiative are what is needed, but self-pity encouraged by those politicians, media, unionists et alia, who reassure by blaming others for someone's predicament, is the enemy of initiative and enterprise. Medicines sometimes are bitter but they may the right thing.

The type of sympathy that you advocate is similar to that of a surgeon who does not want to operate lest he inflict pain. But often to face reality, however tough and painful, is infinitely better than to keep the problem unsolved, which is only going to get worse.

The kind of "compassion" that is behind the welfare state concept has only created more poverty.

It is much better to tell adult people the truth so they might get a move on and make an effort, instead of expecting everything from others. Welfare benefits and heavy state subsidization can be different forms of handout.
Enza Ferrerihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11475073866356059265noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3117781049758667108.post-5887881123252586872013-04-10T23:15:48.295+01:002013-04-10T23:15:48.295+01:00Any industrial and economic polcy mmust care for a...Any industrial and economic polcy mmust care for all, especially the poor.. this is basic Christianity. I agree the economic policy needed sorting but the economic carpet bombing of northern industrial areas, pushing poeple onto a benefit system they did not want to be on, leaving people to wonder where their next meal was coming from.. taking m,en who were proud and heard working miners and removing work, hope and pride.. well there's no wonder they feel bitter.

I don't think we should celebrate Mrs T's death, but you show a real lack of any sympathy or understanding.. that lady wasn't bitter for nothing I'm afraid.. industrial restructuring is one thing, but industrial scorched earth is quite another.
